ADOPTING OLDER DOGS WHO HAVE BEEN IN OUR RESCUE CENTRE FOR MANY YEARS – EREN AND WAFFLE

Eren and Waffle were both dumped at our Rescue centre back in 2014. Eren was on May 12 and Waffle was one day later on 13 May and they have lived together ever since.
Donna contacted KAR earlier this year saying she was coming to live in TRNC and was looking for a dog to adopt. Well, to cut a long story short, one dog became two (they were kennel mates anyway so it made sense).
Here is an update, word for word, from Donna so you can read for yourselves how well they have adapted to their new furever home even after spending over 7 years in our rescue centre.
“We have now had Eren and Waffle for four days and I am amazed at how quickly they have settled into the apartment.
The first day was a little stressful for them but we allowed them to settle in quietly and just gave them space.
We gave them a safe space to sleep at night so that if there were any little accidents then it was not an issue however, they have not had any accidents in the apartment at all.
They love their works and we have got into a lovely routine of a quick walk first thing, breakfast and fuss and then out for a bit longer walk before coming back for a lazy snooze in the shade.
They love being out on our balcony and we had a real break through today when we went swimming as they were left on the balcony and when they saw us coming back to the apartment, they both met us at the door with tails wagging.
I was really apprehensive about taking on two dogs who had been in kennels for so long, but with a little patience, lots of reassurance they have settled into our home as if they have been here all time.
They are still a bit nervous when there are strange noises. When I hoovered on the first day then hide but this morning, I was able to hoover whilst they just lay in their bed watching.
People on our site have commented on how happy they are when we take them for a walk. Waffle was more confident than Eren when we were walking initially but now Eren pushes herself forward and wants to be in front.
When we collected Eren, KAR told us that she did not like being watched when eating, but that has not been an issue she has been more than happy to eat in front of us. We just need to make sure Waffle does not pinch her food as she is a bit greedy.
It also only took them a couple of days to realise that when you open the fridge then they may get a treat like a piece of cheese.
With time, patience, reassurance and lots of love then even after being in kennels for years dogs soon realise, they are on to a good thing.
I am so glad that we did not go for a puppy and we have been able to provide a loving home for two very special little dogs who deserve to have a forever home.”
